“Cibolo” was a name for the American Bison or Buffalo used by both the Spanish and the Americans that were early entrants into New Mexico and Texas. Santa Fe, New Mexico was founded in 1607 by the Spanish. When the Comanche Indians finally gave the Spanish permission to hunt the Bison (Buffalo) they named their Buffalo hunters, using the technique of the Comanche, "Ciboleros"!
Many creeks in Texas were originally named “Cibolo” to denote watering holes frequented by the vast herds of Bison during the period from early 1600’s into the late 1800’s.
